The Romanian national was heard at Austria’s Red Bull Ring during the opening round of the Formula 4 CEZ (Central European Zone) championship, where Luca Viișoreanu and the Romanian team Real Racing secured their first-ever Formula 4 victory.
The 2025 season kicked off with a win at the Red Bull Ring for Luca Viișoreanu and the Real Racing team, in the first round of the Formula 4 CEZ championship. The Romanian driver finished fourth in the weekend’s first race, was forced to retire in the second race after a collision with another driver, and then clinched his maiden Formula 4 race win in the third and final race of the weekend.
This milestone comes less than a year after both the driver and team debuted in Formula 4 competition. It also marks the first time a Romanian driver has won a race in this category with a car prepared by a Romanian team. The 2025 racing program includes a full season in the Italian Formula 4 Championship, which starts in the first weekend of May, as well as the Euro 4 series and selected rounds of the Formula 4 CEZ.
Following pre-season testing, Luca Viișoreanu and Real Racing chose to start the season at a track where they had scored their first Formula 4 points the previous year. “I really like the Austrian circuit, and this is mainly a preparation round because we want to see where we stand in terms of performance after the winter testing,” said Viișoreanu ahead of the season opener.
Viișoreanu quickly adapted to the track’s demands and finished Friday’s test sessions with the second-fastest time. In Saturday’s qualifying session, he placed third, securing a second-row start for the weekend’s opening race.
The first race at the Red Bull Ring was held on Saturday after qualifying. Starting from third, Viișoreanu dropped a few positions at the start but managed to recover and finished fourth, just two seconds behind the final podium spot.
“I qualified third, and although I was hoping for more, it was a good result under the circumstances. During the race, I lost a few spots at the start, caught off guard by how aggressive the other drivers were. I recovered quickly, but that early hesitation cost me a better result. In the end, I finished fourth, but I know the potential I and the team have, so I’m even more motivated for Sunday’s two races,” said Luca Viișoreanu at the end of Saturday.
On Sunday, he started the second race from fourth, based on the first race’s results. However, an incident with Chase Fernandez in the opening lap forced him to retire.
For the third race, the Real Racing driver started from pole position, as the starting grid was based on the first race results but with the top four reversed — his second career Formula 4 pole.
The final race of the Formula 4 CEZ’s first round was impacted by rain just before the start. All drivers switched to wet tires, but Luca Viișoreanu took a gamble and stayed on slicks. The race began behind the safety car, and Viișoreanu held the lead through the opening lap.
Initially disadvantaged by his tire choice on the wet track, he dropped four positions before another safety car period following multiple off-track incidents. After the restart, he quickly regained positions and was back in the lead within a single lap.
Following another safety car phase, Viișoreanu pulled away decisively at the restart and claimed his first Formula 4 victory. He was followed by Gino Trappa and Brad Harrison, who had won the previous two races.
“It was an incredible race! I took a big risk at the beginning, but I felt it was the best strategy for us. Honestly, I was nervous since everyone else switched to wet tires and I wasn’t sure we had made the right decision, but in the end, the team did an amazing job. I’m so happy because we’ve worked so hard, and this win came at the perfect time. I knew we’d made significant progress compared to last season, and this result confirms it. I was a bit upset after the retirement in Race 2, but that no longer matters. We have a tough Italian Formula 4 season ahead, and this win motivates me even more,” said Luca Viișoreanu following his first Formula 4 victory.
After the Red Bull Ring round, Luca Viișoreanu and Real Racing will continue testing, with the first round of the Italian Formula 4 Championship scheduled for the weekend of May 2–4 at the Misano circuit.
“Real Racing is the first Romanian team in Formula 4, and the fact that we managed to win a race in such a competitive field after just one season is extraordinary. Last year, we scored our first points here, and now we’ve earned our first win on the same track. We’re competing against powerful teams, some also racing in Formula 3 and Formula 2, so this result means a lot to me. I’m proud of Luca’s development, of the hard work put in, of our technical staff, and I hope we’ll experience more moments like this during the season,” said Constantin Răileanu, Real Racing’s team manager.
Luca Viișoreanu is supported this Formula 4 season by his partners: Institutul Sânului, Euronautica International, and the Electronic Archive for Secured Transactions (AEGRM).
